Description
The Carmignano PDO is reserved exclusively for Red wine.
Production Area
The production area of Carmignano PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Carmignano and Poggio a Caiano in the Province of Prato, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Carmignano PDO is intense ruby red; the spicy undertones on the nose are accompanied by aromas of pansy, violet, cherry and prune, finishing with a slight hint of brushwood; a robust tannic vein and dense fruit, on a fresh background, blend with progressive linearity, harmony and elegance, leading to a long finish. Carmignano Protected Designation of Origin wine can be released for consumption from June 1st of the second year following the harvest. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine is released for consumption from September 29th (St Michael’s day and festival of Carmignano) of the third year after that in which the grapes were produced. The vinification and mandatory ageing of Carmignano PDO wine must be carried out within the production area; the wine must be aged in oak or chestnut barrels for at least eight months, or one year for Riserva wines.
Additional specifications
The Carmignano PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
