The production area of Canelli PDO in within all or part of the territory of the municipalities of Calamandrana, Calosso, Canelli, Cassinasco, Coazzolo, Bubbio, Castagnole Lanze, Costigliole d'Asti, Loazzolo, Moasca, San Marzano Oliveto in the Province of Asti, and the municipalities of Castiglione Tinella, S. Stefano Belbo, Cossano Belbo, Neive, Neviglie, Mango in the Province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Canelli PDO ranges from pale straw-yellow to intense yellow, at times with greenish to bright golden reflections; it is aromatic on the nose, characteristic of muscat grapes, fragrant, with floral and fruity hints of wildflowers and acacia, apricot, peach, rennet apple, citrus and honey hints, sometimes with fresh vegetal hints; it is sweet on the palate, with fresh acidity varying in intensity and a delicate finish with an aroma of muscat grape, at times lively. It may display the name Riserva if it has undergone a period of ageing and refinement of at least 30 months, commencing October 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced in, at least 20 of which must be in the bottle. Canelli PDO Riserva ranges from straw-yellow to bright golden yellow after refinement and ageing; the nose is complex and aromatic, typical of the muscat grape, with fruity hints of peach and citrus, and hints of balsamic plants like sage, lemon balm or thyme; sometimes with ageing it acquires hints of candied fruit, hydrocarbons or sweet spices like saffron; it is sweet on the palate, with a characteristic aromatic finish, sapid due to the balance between the acidic and sweet components, and at times lively. The grapes used to produce Canelli PDO wine are harvested exclusively by hand.

As is traditional, the label of Canelli PDO can indicate the Moscato grape variety specification –Canelli PDO Moscato – and the specification Riserva. The Canelli PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
