The Canavese PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Spumante Rosé and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Canavese PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Turin, Biella and Vercelli, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Canavese PDO Bianco is distinguished by its straw-yellow colour; the nose offers fruity and floral fragrances, together with notes of white fleshy fruit, plum and hawthorn; it is fresh on the palate with delicate citrusy notes. Canavese PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour, varying in intensity; it is predominantly fruity on the nose, with notes of blueberry and cassis; hints of baked apple blend with liquorice notes are offered on the palate, with a mineral finish. Canavese PDO Rosé has a bright colour that varies from pink to pale ruby-red; it is delicate and pleasing on the nose, with intense notes of fresh fruit; it is dry and harmonious on the palate, with good persistence.Canavese PDO Spumante is pale straw-yellow in colour, with a light, fine and evanescent perlage; it displays delicate fragrances on the nose, with slight notes of hazelnut and bread crust; it is fresh and fruity on the palate, with characteristics that are typical of brut to extra-dry wines. Canavese PDO Spumante Rosé is pink to pale ruby-red in colour, with light and evanescent foam; it is delicate and characteristic on the nose; depending on the typology, which ranges from brut to extra-dry, it is fresh and fruity on the palate with harmonious and dry notes. Canavese PDO Novello is red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers hints of raspberry, small red fruit and field pansy; it is dry and harmonious the palate. The label on bottles or other recipients containing Canavese PDO wine, excluding Spumante, must indicate the year in which the grapes were produced.
Grape variety specifications
The Canavese PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Nebbiolo, Barbera, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
