Description
The Brindisi PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Spumante Rosé and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Brindisi PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Brindisi and Mesagne in the Province of Brindisi, in the Apulia region.
Description of product typologies
Brindisi PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow in colour, with greenish reflections; the nose displays fruity hues of ripe, white fleshy fruit, flowers and aromatic herbs; it is fruity, rounded, fresh and sapid on the palate. Brindisi PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour, varying in intensity, and with ageing it sometimes has brick-red reflections; the intense fragrances of ripe fruit on the nose are enriched with notes of spices and minerals, which evolve with ageing; it is fresh on the palate, with vigorous tannins and a long fruity finish. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an ageing period of at least 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Brindisi PDO Rosé is pink in colour, varying in intensity; it is slightly vinous on the nose, fruity if young, and persistent; it is fresh, delicately fruity, floral and persistent on the palate.Brindisi PDO Spumante is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose displays delicate and fruity fragrances with yeasty notes; it is lively, fresh and delicately citrusy on the palate, with yeast returns. Brindisi PDO Spumante Rosé is pink in colour, varying in intensity, with a fine and persistent perlage; it offers delicate fragrances of fresh red fruit on the nose, with yeasty notes; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate, ranging from extra-brut to extra-dry. Brindisi PDO Novello is red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is slightly vinous, fruity and persistent; it is fresh, velvety, harmonious and pleasing on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Brindisi PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Spumante): min. 90% Chardonnay, Malvasia Bianca, Fiano, Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Negroamaro or Negro Amaro (including Rosé, Spumante Rosé, Riserva), Susumaniello, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Brindisi PDO Negroamaro Riserva must have undergone an ageing period of at least 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.
