The Bolgheri PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Red Superiore and Rosé. The Designation also incorporates two grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Bolgheri PDO is within parts of the territory of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the Province of Livorno, in the Tuscany region.
Description of product typologies
Bolgheri PDO Bianco ranges from straw-yellow to golden yellow, varying in intensity; it has an elegant and intense fragrance with evident sensations of white fleshy fruit, predominantly peach, enriched with hints of brioche blended with a classic hint of toasted almond; it is full-bodied, smooth and balanced on the palate, with a long taste-olfactory persistence. Bolgheri PDO Rosso is intense ruby red with garnet reflections; the nose offers subtle and complex fragrances, displaying notes of ripe dark fruit like blackberry, plum, cassis, with hues of sweet tobacco and well-balanced spices; it is full-bodied, harmonious, smooth and elegant on the palate, with an extremely persistent finish. Bolgheri PDO Rosso Superiore is intense ruby red or garnet red; the nose is vinous, rich and elegant; it is dry, full, robust and harmonious on the palate, with good structure. This wine must be aged for at least two years, starting from January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 1 year must have been spent in oak barrels. Bolgheri PDO Rosato is delicate to intense pink; delicate aromas of red fruit, berries and spiciness can be perceived on the nose; it is smooth on the palate, with a crisp note of freshness and floral and caramel sensations.

It is mandatory for Bolgheri PDO wines to display the geographical specification Toscana on the label, immediately below the designation.
Grape variety specifications
The Bolgheri PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: minimum 85% Vermentino, Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrance and flavour of each specification are typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
Additional specifications
The Bolgheri PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym or traditional name.
