The Bettona PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Bettona PGI is within the entire territory of the municipality of Bettona in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Bettona PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow with greenish reflections; it is delicately floral and fruity on the nose; it is sapid, lively, fresh and harmonious on the palate. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Bettona PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is vivid ruby-red, varying in intensity, tending towards garnet red with ageing; it is fruity on the nose, spicy when aged; it is full, smooth, harmonious and pleasantly bitter on the palate, delicately herbaceous and tannic. Bettona PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a luminous and intense cherry-pink colour; it displays floral notes and delicate fruity sensations on the nose; it is fragrant and sapid on the palate with a pleasant bitter aftertaste. It can also be a Novello wine. Bettona PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is vivid ruby-red colour, varying in intensity, tending towards garnet red with ageing; it displays a vinous and delicate fragrance on the nose, and is delightfully spicy when aged; it is full, smooth, fruity and pleasantly bitter on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Bettona PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Bettona PGI with two grape variety specifications, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes obtained from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of the corresponding varieties, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from grapes produced with the two specified varieties, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each variety is higher than 15% of the total. The specification of the grape varieties must appear on the label in descending order with respect to the actual percentage of grapes obtained from them. The Bettona PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
