Description of product typologies
Bardolino PDO Rosso is ruby-red, sometimes tending towards cherry red, turning garnet red with ageing; delicately fruity aromas burst on the nose, with notes of cherry, marasca, strawberry, blackcurrants and hints of sweet spices; it is dry and smooth on the palate, with undertones of small red crunchy fruit, slightly spicy, balanced and fresh. Classico can be displayed on the label. Bardolino PDO Chiaretto (Rosé) has a characteristic vivid pink colour, tending towards orange with ageing; the nose displays delicate fruity fragrances of small berries, accompanied by a subtle spicy vein of cinnamon, clove and vanilla; it offers juicy sensations of red fruit on the palate, combined with freshness and drinkability. Classico can be displayed on the label. Bardolino PDO Chiaretto Spumante is pale pink, turning orange with ageing, and has a subtle, fine-grained and persistent perlage; the nose offers fragrances of sweet berries and spices; the palate displays pleasant acidity and fragrance, and is sapid with good persistence. It is obtained with natural fermentation methods. Bardolino PDO Novello is clear ruby-red; a fragrance of fresh red fruit stands out on the nose; it is vinous, young, fruity and persistent on the palate. Classico can be displayed on the label. Bardolino PDO Chiaretto is the Rosé version of the Bardolino, obtained with the “pink” vinification of the grapes, or rather, with minimum maceration of the skins, thereby leaving only a small amount of their natural colour substances on the must. Bardolino PDO wines (including Classico) can be released for consumption from January 15th of the year following the grape harvest.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The designation can be accompanied by three geographical sub-areas: Montebaldo, produced in the municipalities of Affi, Caprino Veronese, Cavaion Veronese, Costermano sul Garda and Rivoli Veronese; La Rocca, produced in the municipalities of Bardolino, Castelnuovo del Garda, Garda, Lazise, Peschiera del Garda and Torri del Benaco; Sommacampagna, produced in the municipalities of Bussolengo, Pastrengo, Sommacampagna, Sona and Valeggio sul Mincio, all in the Province of Verona. All three sub-designations are only red wines made with 35-90% Corvina Veronese (Cruina or Corvina) – a maximum of 20% Corvinone can replace an equal percentage of Corvina – 5-40% Rondinella, maximum 15% Molinara, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 20%, with a maximum of 10% for each single grape variety. The wine is bright pale ruby red; it is characteristic on the nose, revealing small fresh fruit, spices, and possible grassy and floral hints; it is dry, fine, sapid and harmonious on the palate.
