The production area of Barbera d’Alba PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Barbera d’Alba PDO is garnet-red with purplish reflections; it displays ample and complex fragrances on the nose, with fruity notes reminiscent of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, blackcurrants, strawberry and red fruit jam, and strong spicy hints of cinnamon, vanilla and green pepper; it is full on the palate, with good body, a slightly tannic note and a long, persistent finish. It can display Superiore on the label if it has undergone an ageing period of 12 months, 4 of which must be in wood, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. Barbera d’Alba PDO Superiore wines can be released for consumption from November 1st of year following that of the grape harvest. The vinification and ageing processes of Barbera d’Alba PDO must be carried out within the territory of the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Turin. In the designation and presentation of Barbera d’Alba PDO and Barbera d’Alba Superiore, it is mandatory to display the grape production year on the label.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Barbera d'Alba PDO can be accompanied by the geographical sub-area Barbera d'Alba PDO Castellinaldo, reserved only for the red wine and obtained from grapes harvested within the entire territory of the municipality of Castellinaldo d'Alba and parts of the municipalities of Vezza d'Alba, Canale, Priocca, Magliano Alfieri, Castagnito and Guarene, in the Province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region. It is made with a minimum of 85% Barbera grapes, pure or with the addition of a maximum of 15% grapes of the Nebbiolo grape variety. The wine is ruby red, tending towards garnet with ageing; the nose is characteristic with fruity notes; it is dry, sapid, harmonious and well-structured on the palate. It is mandatory to indicate the year of production of the grapes on the label. The vinification and ageing processes of Barbera d'Alba PDO Castellinaldo wines must be carried out in the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Turin.
