Production Area
The production area of Barbagia PGI is within the territory of the municipalities of Fonni, Gavoi, Lodine, Mamoiada, Nuoro, Oliena, Ollolai, Olzai, Oniferi, Orani, Orgosolo, Orotelli, Ortine, Ottana, Sarule in the Province of Nuoro, in the Sardinia region.
Description of product typologies
Barbagia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow to amber; it is floral and characteristic on the nose, with notes of white fruit; it ranges from sweet and dry on the palate and is fresh and smooth with a slightly fruity flavour. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Barbagia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is subtle ruby-red to garnet red, depending on the grape variety; it is full on the nose, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good body. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Barbagia PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pale to dark pink, depending on the type of vinification and grape variety; the aromas are delicately fruity; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Barbagia PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from red with purple reflections to ruby-red; its fragrance is characteristic; it varies from dry to slightly sweet on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Barbagia PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region, with the exclusion of Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Muscat, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino and Vernaccia, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Barbagia PGI wines with specification of one of the grape varieties, can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine, and as Novello for wines obtained from red grapes. Barbagia PGI wines with a grape variety specification must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
