The Amelia PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Vin Santo, Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Amelia PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Terni, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Amelia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; on the nose it displays fragrances ranging from white flowers to ripe fruit, peach and apricot, aromatic herbs; on the palate it is fresh and sapid, with a persistent fruity finish. Amelia PDO Rosso is intense ruby-red; a cherry fragrance merges with notes of mild spices and lucerne on the nose; it is enveloping, sapid and harmonious on the palate. Riserva can be displayed on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum mandatory period of ageing of at least 2 years, of which 6 months in wooden barrels and 6 months in the bottle. The ageing period commences on November 1st of the harvest year. Amelia PDO Rosato is pale to cherry pink; the nose offers fruity fragrances of fresh cherry and is delicately aromatic; it is fresh and dry on the palate, with a fruity finish. Amelia PDO Vin Santo is amber, increasing in depth with ageing; the nose displays intense fragrances of dried apricot, bitter almond and honey; the palate offers a sweet, tart flavour and long persistence. Amelia PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice is dark to pale pink; it displays intense fragrances of dried and dehydrated fruit, honey and spices on the nose; it is warm, smooth, mellow, sweet and very persistent on the palate. Amelia PDO Novello is ruby-red, varying in intensity; the nose is characterised by delicate fruity fragrances of cherry, berries and flowers; the cherry returns on the palate with an underlying freshness and a delicate perception of sapidity. The vinification method for the production of Amelia PDO Vin Santo and Amelia PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, involves drying the grapes and subsequently mashing them; this must take place no earlier than December 1st of the harvest year and no later than March 31st of the following year; storage and ageing must take place in wooden kegs for a period of at least 2 years. The wine cannot be released for consumption before November 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.
Grape variety specifications
The Amelia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: minimum 85% Malvasia Toscana, Grechetto, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 15%. From red grape varieties (including Riserva): minimum 85% Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Merlot, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 15%. The characteristics of the colour, scents and flavour of each specification are typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. Amelia PDO Ciliegiolo has a deep ruby-red colour; the nose offers ample and elegant fragrances; it is dry and full on the palate, with a distinctive flavour. Amelia PDO Grechetto is pale yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is characteristic elegant and persistent; it is dry and harmonious on the palate. Amelia PDO wines specifying the Merlot, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese grape varieties, may only display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum mandatory period of ageing of at least 2 years, of which 6 months in wooden barrels and 6 months in the bottle.
