The Allerona PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red and Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, White Novello, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Allerona PGI is within the territory of the municipalities of Allerona, Castelviscardo and Castelgiorgio in the Province of Terni, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Allerona PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow; it is floral, fruity and characteristic on the nose; on the palate it is dry and fresh, with a slightly fruity flavour. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Allerona PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red, varying in intensity; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good body. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Allerona PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity; it displays delicate fruity fragrances; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Allerona PGI Passito Bianco is yellow, tending towards amber with ageing; it displays intense fruity notes on the nose; on the palate it is dry, sapid and characteristic. Allerona PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is deep red to garnet red; the fragrance is intense and characteristic; on the palate it is harmonious, sweet and velvety. Allerona PGI Novello Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow; it is vinous on the nose with a delicate fragrance; on the palate it is dry, full-bodied and extremely sapid. Allerona PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is a beautiful ruby-red colour, varying in intensity; its fragrance is delicate and characteristic; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good body. Allerona PGI Novello Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity; it displays a delicate fragrance on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fairly fresh on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Allerona PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region, is for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land, made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 15%, can be used, pure or combined, in the production of the above-mentioned wines. Allerona PGI with two grape variety specifications is reserved for wines (including Frizzante and Novello) obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of the corresponding varieties, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the specified grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the two varieties is higher than 15% of the total. The grape varieties must be indicated on the label in descending order, in respect to the actual quantity of grapes obtained from them. Allerona PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
