The Alcamo PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Spumante, Spumante Rosé, Late Harvest White and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Alcamo PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Trapani and Palermo, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Alcamo PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow in colour with greenish reflections; the intense aroma is reminiscent of peach, pineapple, apple and hawthorn; it is dry,warm and sapid on the palate. The label can also display the word Classico. Alcamo PDO Rosso has an intense ruby-red colour; the nose offers sensations of balsamic and notes of cassis, sweet spices and graphite minerality; it is tannic, sapid and mineral on the palate, with a fruity finish. The label can also display the word Riserva if it is has undergone an mandatoryageing period of 2 years, commencing December 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested, 6 months of which must be in wooden recipients. Alcamo PDO Rosato is pink in colour; it displays fruity scents on the nose, with delicate notes of forest fruits; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with light mineral fragrances and low tannin. Alcamo PDO White Spumante is straw-yellow in colour, at times with greenish reflections, with a fine and persistent perlage; it is fruity and harmonious on the nose, with traces of fresh fruit, white flowers, bread crust and a light citrusy note; on the palate it is dry or semi-dry, citrusy, balanced and persistent. Alcamo PDO Spumante Rosé is pink in colour, varying in intensity, with a fi ne and persistent perlage; it exhibits fruity notes of red fruits, raspberries, currants, fruit sweets and sweet spices on the nose; it is dry or semi-dry on the palate, intense and persistent, with an aftertaste of fruit. Alcamo PDO White Spumante and Alcamo PDO Spumante Rosé must be produced exclusively by fermentation in bottles or autoclaves. Alcamo PDO Bianco Vendemmia Tardiva varies from straw to golden yellow in colour; the persistent fragrance is delicately laden with ripe fruit, dried apricots and candied citrus fruit; it is creamy, velvety and fresh on the palate, with an aromatic aftertaste. The grapes must not have been harvested before September 1 and must have undergone a drying process. Alcamo PDO Novello is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity, with violet reflections; it is fruity, characteristic and intense on the nose; on the palate it is dry, mellow, harmonious and balanced.
Grape variety specifications
The Alcamo PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Catarratto, Ansonica (Inzolia), Grillo, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Calabrese or Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
